Technology scouting

Identifying novel technologies to strengthen your product and service portfolio

Challenges:

  • Understanding emerging markets and competitors
We prioritise target markets and evaluate high potential core and non-core Intellectual Property assets.
  • Finding the “right fit” for your organisation
Whatever you are seeking, from high growth SMEs to multinationals developing technologies complementary to your offering, we ensure that our search criteria align with your strategic goals.

Case study: Multinational consumer electronics manufacturer

Our client was looking to acquire late-stage technologies in the autonomous vehicle space. We worked closely with them to develop a rigorous search and selection methodology for new technologies, including an approach to quantify abstract concepts such as the risk of reverse engineering. Our work resulted in identifying several strategic opportunities for our client to pursue.

Technology Valuation

Building robust valuation models to help you understand the market value of your IP

Challenges:

  • De-risking early-stage technologies under development
We determine a defensible value for a new product, by considering the timelines and costs associated with product development; from prototype creation, field studies and overcoming regulatory hurdles.
  • Robustness of valuation approach
We combine technology valuation methods, with the goal of developing  a well-informed position from which to negotiate.

Case study: A large conglomerate in the energy sector

Our client was looking to divest a technology/product in their portfolio. This technology had applications in at least six industry sectors, each with a unique risk and cost (of development) profile. Our solution was to combine several technology valuation methodologies and, complement these with insights from our network of industry insiders, with an intimate understanding of the complexities of taking similar technologies to market. With this information we built a robust valuation model that our client was able to successfully leverage in licensing and sales negotiations.

IP licensing & sales

Identifying new homes for your technologies and raising new revenue streams

Challenges:

  • Identifying ‘best fit’ partnering opportunities for technologies with the potential for multiple applications/multiple sectors
We help you navigate the commercial landscape for your technology, identifying partners whose strategy aligns with yours.
  • Early-stage technology licensing can be a difficult sell
Our Oxford University Innovation spinout heritage gives us a unique advantage: we are part of one of the world’s leading early-stage technology ecosystems, and experts in marketing early-stage technologies for licensing or sale.

Case study: A European energy and fossil fuels company

Our client was looking to divest a novel battery technology, due to non-alignment with wider company strategy. In six weeks we identified several potential acquirers, discreetly marketing the technology to interested parties (hand-picked individuals) in procurement and innovation. To support license negotiations, we conducted a valuation exercise on the technology, pricing it for several industry sectors and ensuring that our client was well prepared for negotiations with buyers.

IP repositioning

Identifying new revenue streams by pivoting your technologies into new application areas

Challenges:

  • Identifying IP with high repositioning potential
We conduct a detailed review of your IP portfolio to identify new applications for the most promising candidates.
  • Building credibility with new markets and customers
We ensure that the presentation of your IP and the underlying technology aligns with potential partner’s strategic goals.

Case study: Multinational automotive manufacturer

Our client was looking to out-license some mature technologies into new markets. We entered a risk sharing agreement with them and identified several attractive industry sectors, identified potential buyers to secure new revenue streams.

Developing innovation leadership skills

Tackling the challenges that limit your organisation’s innovation productivity

Challenges:

  • Uncovering ideas and developing them into validated products
We bring together siloed teams to discover, test and develop new ideas and processes. From ideation workshops through to agile prototyping. We can help develop and de-risk early-stage ideas and accelerate your innovation productivity goals.
  • Building a business case for innovation leadership
Truly innovative businesses need leaders who are capable of catalyzing growth, mobilising resources and empowering open innovation at all levels. We can help you crystalize your intrapreneurship strategy through evidence-based insights and real-world expertise.

Case study: Multinational computer technology company

Our client was looking for a fresh perspective to improve innovation productivity within their middle management teams. Drawing on decades of experience of innovation process within the Oxford ecosystem, we delivered an interactive online workshop focused on understanding and cultivating the ‘human’ and ‘process’ elements of successful innovation.

Route to market strategy

Supporting successful market entry through comprehensive landscaping, analysis and strategy

Challenges:

  • Understanding downstream channels and end user markets
  • Building a comprehensive picture of the technology landscape
  • Benchmarking against competitors and emerging technologies
  • Visibility of regulatory and compliance standards across markets and territories

Case study: International chemicals and materials conglomerate

Our client was considering the acquisition of a medical-device startup, a market outside of their core offering. Working iteratively with the client we dissected prospective downstream channels; supply chains; regulatory standards; and the efficacy of competing technologies. We conducted a comparative analysis of the prospect’s product portfolio against competitors and emerging market players and provided comprehensive techno-commercial due-diligence, building a robust route to market strategy.
