Social science project support for the University of Reading

Challenge

The University of Reading reached out to Oxentia to provide expertise on knowledge exchange and commercialisation strategy and projects due to a lack of resource to progress the pipeline of projects. The University requested that a designated Oxentia team member provide in-person support so that the Director and University of Reading team could meet regularly to review the processes and systems for commercialisation and work directly with research teams on their commercialisation projects.

Approach

Oxentia provided in-person commercialisation and strategic support to over twenty UK universities, including:

  • Cranfield
  • Bournemouth
  • Westminster
  • Leeds
  • Sussex
  • Winchester
  • Oxford Brookes
  • Sheffield Hallam
  • Aston
  • Hull

Our accelerator programmes have directly supported researchers from over 100 universities worldwide in commercialising their research, spanning across a wide range of life sciences projects, such as developing diagnostic protocols, Alzheimer’s therapies, pro-drug licensing strategies, and commercialising new assays.

Our expert in-person support has addressed all commercialisation challenges and provided access to broader market research, IP due diligence, and business case development for new spin-out services, helping us build trusted partnerships with universities.

A designated Oxentia team member reviewed policies and frameworks onsite to support commercialisation of research outputs at the University (IP and consultancy policy). We ensured that the different spin-out formation decision making stages received timely and thorough approval by introducing a spin-out risk management framework . Here, we worked closely with senior university stakeholders to approve any required policy changes and raise awareness of these changes by engaging with research teams.

Our dedicated support and strategic insights enabled the University to accelerate its commercialisation pipeline, leading to multiple successful spin-outs and ongoing partnerships with industry leaders.

Impact

The spin-out risk management framework we introduced, ensured the different stages of the spin-out formation decision making process were discussed and agreed for implementation by key stakeholders and decision makers of the University.

12 potential commercialisation projects progressed from 2022-2023, including business case support for a life sciences project intending to spin-out from the University.

We advised and supported an internal translational funding programme and supported a successful £800k funding application.
